Building

Our building is a portion of the Union Block, built in 1896. It is a fine example of the Queen Anne architectural style, with decorative brick corbelling and round-arched windows with stone lintels. The neighboring businesses in the Union Block feature multiple rounded bays, oriels, and a corner turret with a conical roof. An important historic feature is the original 2nd story entry at 127 ½ with marble tile floor and double half-doors.

The building, as part of the Historic Square District, has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The entire Historic Square District was given this distinction in 2013 after consideration by the National Park Service.

Previously, it has been home to the J. R. Smith Paint and Wallpaper business, a pool hall, and a childrens' clothing store, as well as several law offices.

Perhaps most importantly, from 1934 to the late 20th century, it became the prominent local law firm, Harris and Harris. Spanning three generations, it was the law firm of Hiram Harris, sons William and Edwin Harris, and William's son, William Kenner Harris.

More recently, the lower portion provided offices for the law firm of Kanoski & Associates. Kenner Harris's daughter, Janel Harris was the fourth generation of the Harris family to own the building. Most recently the upstairs was home to Storie's Violins operated by violin maker Thomas W. Storie, Janel Harris's husband.

The building remained in the Harris family until it was purchased in 2013 by the present owners, John R. and Kazue W. Graham to become the home of Parnassus Antiques & Curios.
