A lot has changed since the 1949 Golden Anniversary for Western Illinois University, as shown in this map insert in the back of the Western Illinois State College Golden Anniversary Bulletin published in October 1949.

The name of the university has changed, as is obvious from the title. The Veterans Apartments, repurposed barracks from nearby Camp Ellis, have been replaced by two dorms: Corbin and Olsen Halls. Browne Hall and Hainline Theater replaced the baseball diamond at the corner of Western Avenue and Murray Street.

The Agricultural Experimental Plot is now Malpass Library and Beu Health Center has been built at the same corner. The Rustic Lodge has been replaced by Knoblauch Hall and the University Union. The Gravel Road was renamed to Stadium Drive. Although the Ravine is still there, along with the concrete outdoor theater seating area, the Forest Preserve with many trees and trails has become East Village student housing. The Girls’ Dorm, Monroe (later called Grote) Hall has been demolished.

Several other classroom buildings have been added, as well: Tillman, Sallee, Horrabin, Stipes, Morgan, Waggoner and Currens Halls. A new thoroughfare, University Drive, was added. Additional dorms and many parking lots were built to accommodate the increasing student population.

To the North, the College Farm and Golf Course still exist, although larger now and the President’s Home has been added.
